For This Much Money, The Kinks Should Be Worked Out By Now

Finding a built-in wall oven to fit an older home's dimensions is hard. We had to do some cabinetry remodeling when our first 24" KitchenAid Superba was purchased in 1999. I thought I was getting a top of the line appliance. After using the self-cleaning feature two times, the oven blew its fuse, locked down and the repairman declared that feature officially dead. For the next twelve years I manually cleaned that "self-cleaning" oven. The problem is not unique to me; it still persists in today's models--just google "KitchenAid self-cleaning problems." A class action lawsuit has even been filed against KitchenAid regarding this very topic. However, other than the self-cleaning issue, the oven has performed wonderfully (virtually problem-free) for about eleven years. It has many great features--the convection oven produces attractive, evenly browned baked goods and roasts. There is a built-in meat thermometer, and dehydrating foods or proofing bread is easy. I was a happy cook. At least until the twelfth year. Cooking times started to fluctuate, there seemed to be uneven heat distribution and the clock light went very dim. The computer board began to register "PF" (power failures) before totally dying. We needed to replace it, but too bad KitchenAid doesn't make or sell brand new computer boards for their older models. Instead, we had to purchase a refurbished one online (around $200). It lasted about four months before another error code started registering F2-E6--a keypad malfunction. The keypad is part of the computer board, so you guessed it, we needed yet another computer board. Fortunately, the online company sent us another free of charge, but we figured maybe it was time to replace a tired oven instead of refurbished computer boards that have temporary life. The trouble is, there are not many 24" double wall oven models out there, and every one has odd dimensions not matching ours. None offers a convection oven. Only one met our needs to a T, and that was an updated KitchenAid Superba. Before acting, I contacted KitchenAid to see if the self-cleaning problem had been resolved. The representative said overall the problem has been fixed, but occasionally some oven owners still experience self-cleaning breakage. Their warranty is good for one year, and if a self-cleaning issue does arise within that timeframe, they will repair the problem, but not replace the oven. Oven replacement is considered only after many repairs (within the first year), and after both a qualified repairman and KitchenAid determine the problem is unfixable. None of that sounds good. I called my local repairman. He agreed--lots of good KitchenAid wall ovens have no problems whatsoever, but occasionally there's that one bad apple oven with a major self-cleaning issue. He pointed out KitchenAid isn't the only company with oven problems. Other manufacturers have their own set of problems unique to that particular brand. I was told to steer clear of GE--apparently their oven problems/repair record is even worse. No brand sounds problem-free. What is a consumer to do? We decided to buy another KitchenAid Superba, but I have decided not to use the self-cleaning feature....ever. The repairman suggested I self-clean every other month within the first year's warranty to assure it works, but who wants toxic fumes at 500 degrees for 2-4 hour stretches at a time? We have pet birds; I don't want to expose them to that. I hate the thought of manually cleaning my oven, especially after paying over $2,000 with the expectation all new oven features should work properly from the get-go. I shouldn't have to jump through hoops ensuring they do. After seeing so many complaints about self-cleaning issues online and experiencing it myself, I just don't want to go through that hassle again. And basically, that was the only problem I ever encountered. I did expect the first oven to last longer, but according to appliance statistics and my trusted repairman, this is the norm nowadays. On that note, one last comment. Why do appliances (in general) break after an average of 8-15 years? It seems pride of workmanship has gone out the window while consumer costs have soared. Is it deliberate that companies use more complicated than necessary features (thus more likely to break) while skimping on true quality? By the way, don't expect a free broiler pan to accompany this oven, the way they used to in the past. Your $2000 will not purchase that either. How times have changed.

Absolutely love this oven. I replaced a Thermodor and this is so much better. I ordered from ApplianceConnection and everything was absolutely perfect.
