KitchenAid Ovens Have Self-Destruct Defect--Search the Net Before You Buy!

ZERO STARS. I don't know how this can actually happen in the U.S., the most litigious country for nonsensical lawsuits, yet KitchenAid has somehow managed to not have a class action lawsuit filed (that I know of) against them for marketing & selling ovens for years that have a known, documented, non-fixed, built-in flaw that stops if not destroys the oven. It's as easy as Step 1, engage the self cleaning feature Done. Than's it. You've now hit the "self destruct" button on your oven. Your recourse: NONE. Perhaps not enough people have pooled together nor had the where-with-all to sue KitchenAid. My wife engaged the self-clean self-destruct feature of our "SUPERBA" oven for the very first time today. Now the oven is dead. I went online to discover hundreds of stories, cases, reports. KitchenAid, if called, will actually tell you to "not use that feature" and use "Easy Off" instead. Can you imagine if Ford or GM had a button on a car that read "Lock Trunk" but it instead ignited the car? And customer service retorted: "Don't use the trunk." Would there not be lawsuits, recourse, outcry, accountability? Please never ever buy another KitchenAid product again. While researching, I found that their dishwashers have loads of upset people wondering why there is no class action lawsuit on their behalf. BTW: KitchenAid has noted that the term "Heavy Duty" is simply a product name or model...it is not a description of the product's supposed "stronger" functionality...because...in fact, the product is not capable of heavy duty. The oven alone, when in self cleaning mode, gets so hot that it blows its own thermostat. Good thing the folks at KitchenAid don't work for Nasa! Of course, that would make them "rocket scientists" and that surely will never be the case. I pray we can get a class action suit off of the ground. How dare any company be allowed to continue to carry on this way.

This excellent product shares a common problem with other wall ovens that is easily fixed

This is an excellent product. As the other reviewers note though, cleaning caused them to self-destruct. You will see hundreds of other reviews for wall ovens from a variety of manufacturers all claiming the same issue. You'll see some really scary stories as well of ovens almost causing fires, which they can. We went through this 12 years ago with a GE wall oven. The problem is the cabinetry it was mounted in wasn't much bigger than the oven. There was no ventilation around the oven and it was over-heating and breaking, boards, protective fuse links. Our oven walls even warped (i.e, partially melted) and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer covered this.Here's how we fixed it for good, have this done AS YOU ARE INSTALLING YOUR WALL OVEN, or having it done!I pulled the oven out of the cavity. Not hard at all, I needed to loosen 4 screws. The cavity of our oven is under-counter, has expensive custom cabinets on either side. On one side I drilled a 4" hole at the back of the cabinet into the the adjacent cabinet. Then I drilled a series of 3/8 inch holes along the wooden 'kickplate' under the front of the oven, but close to the bottom of the oven itself. These holes come out the front of the cabinet to the room, but they're so high up on the kickplate that you can't see them unless you lay on the floor and look at the oven. Your head literally needs to be on the floor to see them.I then mounted an AC powered, thermostatically-controlled fan inside the adjacent cabinet so that it blows air into the oven cavity when the heat reaches 87 degrees. This air comes out the front of the oven into the room. YES, THIS WILL CAUSE THE FAN TO MOVE HEAT OUT THE FRONT HOLES INTO YOUR KITCHEN! To deal with this when it gets warm we open windows or turn on the exhaust fan. The fan is very quiet, we don't notice any extra noise. If you go to a stereo or furniture store, you'll notice that there are cabinets for electronics that have this same cooling fan arrangement. The problem with these ovens is that the electronics can't take the heat. You'll lose the oven controls and displays first, but you'll also melt parts of the oven components during the clean cycle.Shame on the installers for not telling us this, I had to come up with this myself. There are states though that require this as code for safety. It's really needed.I would search the internet for 'cabinet cooler fan system', you'll see a variety of solutions. My fan moves 30 cubic feet of air per minute. Enough to solve my problem.

Kitchen Aid Double wall ovens/microwave KEMS308SSS04

What a huge disappointment! We put all new appliances in our house when we totally gutted our 1958 family vacation cottage in 2010. Never had I had such an opportunity to pick "whatever I wanted!" At the recommendation of our local independent appliance store, I chose all Kitchen Aid...what a mistake. I just used the self-cleaning feature and just like everyone else, now the microwave oven will not work and the light will not switch off so we just pulled the circuit breaker and have nothing. I always check the Internet for reviews when I purchase, why oh why did I just listen to the offered opinion of the sales associate and be so "proud" to purchase all American made appliances? How could this continue to happen for what looks like at least 7 years? How can this company be so dishonest and get away with it? How can local businesses in your own town sell you something they know is defective and will give you nothing but trouble? We are not talking cutting age technology/electronics here, it is a self cleaning oven and microwave for Heavens Sake, been around since the 70s! Now what? I wait for the repair man and use my toaster oven. Is there is a class action suit, I am in!
