This is a fantastic freezer but I dinged it one star because the company replaced the drawers with shelves. If you like shelves, as Avanti says most people do, you will LOVE this freezer.I own the Avanti 799 and it has 5 clear drawers that I can organize my frozen goods in. I wanted to buy another one and Avanti no longer makes the drawers and just has the ugly wire shelves. So I purchased the Equator below.Here is an upright with DRAWERS not shelves. See my Amazon review on the Equator freezer.According to Avanti, this model VM165 is the same as the VM 799 except slightly smaller interior and it has no drawers. Avanti didn't say it but the EPA constantly pushing energy star efficiency forces manufacturers to use more insulation. If I had to guess, the extra insulation made the Avanti interior smaller and to cut costs, Avanti gave up drawers for shelves. Whirlpool (and I bet Avanti also) makes small upright freezers with drawers for European and Asian markets - very popular - but Whirlpool doesn't make them for the American market thanks to a hostile nanny state EPA.Pros1. It is a manual. This means it is more more energy efficient and it isn't as likely to freezer burn food. It has to be defrosted once or twice a year and it is simple to do.2. It is VERY TOUGH. It survived my forgetfulness. After defrosting, the freezer was set to FAST FREEZE and I was then supposed to move the dial back to to 3 or 4 and I FORGOT. The Avanti STAYED ON FAST FREEZE FOR several MONTHS in a room with NO AC in FLORIDA with temperature in high 90's or above which would have burned out any other freezer especially since the freezer was empty causing it to work that much harder. The "yellow" and "red" alert lights came on A LOT because it was unnecessarily trying to maintain a FAST FREEZE in an empty freezer. In July 2011, I purchased $300 in frozen meat/food and placed it in the freezer and noticed that red/yellow light again. Worried, I downloaded the manual and checked the freezer setting and realized it was STILL ON FAST FREEZE after all this time and turned it down to 3 and the freezer is back to the normal GREEN light and my $300 in groceries are safe. This is definitely one tough freezer.3. It holds a lot of food. This freezer has more than enough freezer space for a small family. Do not be fooled by the small size.4. Small footprint. Because it is upright, it doesn't take up a big footprint which is great for small apartments/homes or for those not wanting a huge freezer.5. It is UPRIGHT. a) This makes it easy to store items 2) Easy to FIND items 3) Easy on your back as there is no CONSTANT bending over freezing your hands off digging around like coffin freezers force people to do. 4) Easy to SEE the items in the freezer.Cons1. Newer model has wire shelves - not drawers.
